Having weight loss surgery can be an incredibly effective tool in the battle to gain control of your body weight and maintain a healthy weight. Bariatric surgery is only one part of the process and bad habits can still lead to an unhealthy weight with or without bariatric surgery.

If a patient is paying for the services entirely out-of-pocket and outside the insurance reimbursement system, then some of the most onerous hurdles can be more easily overcome. In those cases, patients generally arrive and begin undergoing the educational sessions and evaluation prior to surgery, then surgery and immediate postoperative recovery can all take place during the same visit.

With commercial bariatric surgery insurance, there is a pre-authorization requirement and then there may be other conditions imposed by the insurance plan which add more time to the process and may involve a two-visit process rather than a single visit.

In a typical session, the bariatric surgical team from the Division of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery will be available to discuss the different aspects of weight loss surgery, including nutrition, health and fitness, lifestyle modification and other health related topics.

The format varies from month to month and each session features a different expert physician that will be available to answer any questions related to weight loss surgery.

These are informal meetings and are designed to allow you to learn more about weight loss surgery in a comfortable, low-pressure setting.
