Medical Phentermine

Published by admin on November 13, 2009

Phentermine is the brand name for a drug that belongs to the amphetamine class. Also known as Adipex, it has been used in cold medications. However, recently, it’s become more commonly used in appetite suppressants. Its main aim is to suppress the appetite of patients who are morbidly obese. When combined with a diet and moderate exercise, it has proved itself quite successful. It is responsible for the release of chemicals in the brain that signal when a person is hungry or not. It is only approved for short term use, because it’s been shown to have the addictive qualities of other drugs in its class.

The drug was first developed in 1953, and it was originally marketed as an appetite suppressant by the Federal Drug Administration. In 1998, it was removed from pharmaceutical shelves. Since its inception, there have been almost no clinical trials examining the long term usage effects of the drug. In 1990, a mixture of phentermine without prescription and Fenfluramine (also known as Phen-Fen) was marketed as the latest wonder drug in weight loss. Seven years later, multiple cases of heart valve disease were discovered in users of Phen-Fen, which is what led to its removal in 1998. However, the drug, itself, is still available for consumer use.

Phentermine is classified as a controlled substance. This means that it’s supposed to only be available by a doctor’s express prescription. However, it’s still available for purchase on the Internet. Because researchers are unsure the exact role that Phentermine played in the enlarging of heart valves in Phen-Fen, it is recommended only for short term usage. Doctors strongly recommend that it is not used beyond a period of twelve weeks. Unfortunately, patients, after seeing its original effect, continue to take the drug in an effort to lose weight. Its other side effects can include; insomnia, blurred vision, hypertension, vomiting, and heartburn.

In patients who follow their doctor’s orders, there has been, on average, a twelve to eighteen percent reduction of the patient’s body weight in the twelve week period. Used responsibly, it is a great way to lose weight. It may be worth asking your doctor about if you are considered obese. Certain medical conditions may exclude you from using Phentemine, and you should be certain to fully disclose any medical conditions to your doctor to avoid any adverse reactions.
